  EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MINUTES  
November 11, 1998

Members Present:

Kent Gardner (Executive Director), David Grady (Editor), Michael Shonrock (Vice President), Mardie Sorensen (Province Advisor Coordinator), Carol Thompson (Secretary/Treasurer), and Ed Whipple (President).

Members Absent:

None

Call To Order:

The Fall Executive Council Meeting of The National Order of Omega was called to order by Ed Whipple, President, on Wednesday, November 11, 1998, 5:00 p.m.MST, by conference call.

Reports:

1. Fellowship Report:

Michael Shonrock reported to the Executive Council that he has received the applications for The National Order of Omega Fellowship Awards.

The Executive Council reviewed the nine (9) candidates for the Doctoral Fellowship Award including:

After further review and discussion, a motion was made by Carol Thompson and seconded by Ed Whipple to select Mari Ann Callais (Southeastern Lousiana University), Michael Hutmaker (St. John's University), Tara L. Knudson (University of Nebraska, Omaha), Frank Shushock Jr. (University of Maryland), and Barbara E. Stewart (Appalachian State University) for the Doctoral Fellowship Award ($1,000 each). Motion passed.

The Executive Council reviewed the one candidate for the Masters Fellowship Award which included:

After review and discussion of the application materials, a motion was made by Mardie Sorensen and seconded by David Grady to award the Masters Fellowship ($750) to Jamison J. Keller (California State University, San Bernadino). Motion passed.

The Executive Council reviewed the fourteen (14) applicants for the Graduate Assistant Fellowship Award including:

After further review and discussion, a motion was made by David Grady and seconded by Carol Thompson to select Amanda Barton (Eastern Illinois University), Matthew Robert Caires (University of Vermont), Sadie M. Chase (University of Denver), Tricia E. Durgin (University of Idaho), K. Sean McGreevey Jr. (Bowling Green State University), and Douglas Palmquist (Texas Tech University) for the Graduate Assistant Fellowship Award ($500 each). Motion passed.

Michael reported that the Fellowship recipients would be announced at the Order of Omega Recognition Reception Saturday, December 5, 1998. Michael also reported that he would mail follow-up congratulation letters to each of the Fellowship recipients and their respective supervisors.

2. Case Study Competition:

Michael Shonrock reported to the Executive Council that the Order of Omega Case Study Competition will be held on Thursday, December 3, 1998 from 1:00 - 6:00 p.m.. Michael asked the Executive Council to serve as judges. Kent Gardner, Mardie Sorensen, Michael Shonrock, and Kent Pawlak are confirmed to serve as judges.

3. Order of Omega Scholarship Program:

Michael Shonrock reported that he has received 110 applications for the Order of Omega Scholarship. He indicated that the selection committee would be receiving the applications Friday, November 13, 1998.

4. Omega Trends:

David Grady reported that the Omega Trends Editorial Board is preparing a report for the Summer Board of Directors meeting to outline the future direction for the newsletter.

5. Province Advisor Report:

Mardie Sorensen reported that Tina Barnett (Eta Province) has resigned her position as Province Advisor. Mardie asked the Executive Council for names of possible individuals to fill the vacancy.

6. Board of Directors Position Vacancy - NIC Position:

The Executive Council discussed options for filling the NIC Board of Director position vacated by Dave Westol. A motion was made by David Grady and seconded by Michael Shonrock to ask Bob Biggs of Phi Delta Theta to serve for a three year term on the Board of Directors. Motion passed. Kent Gardner asked Ed Whipple to extend the invitation to serve on the Order of Omega Board of Directors. The Executive Council suggested asking Brandon Miller, Director of Leadership Development for Delta Tau Delta, to serve for a one year interim term, if Bob Biggs was unable to serve a three year term on the Board of Directors.

7. NASPA Conference:

Kent Gardner reported that the Order of Omega has been asked to serve as one of the financial sponsors of the breakfast/lunch that will be held for Senior Student Affairs Officers at the NASPA Conference in New Orleans, March 1999. The sponsorship is $1,000. The program will focus around issues facing fraternities and sororities on the college campus. After discussion, the Executive Council agreed to serve as one of the financial sponsors of the program.

8. Inter-Association Alcohol Task Force:

Michael Shonrock proposed that the Order of Omega join the Inter-Association Alcohol Task Force. After discussion, the Executive Council agree to have Ed Whipple and Michael Shonrock serve as the representatives of Order of Omega on the Inter-Association Alcohol Task Force.
